Trip to Northern Bali
We went with Made today up the centre of Bali to the North Coast. Beautiful drive, through rice fields, and the mountains. First stop was at the crocodile park, where we saws lots of snakes and big crocodiles. One pen of crocodiles must have had about 30-40 in the one area, where sadly an unsuspecting little duck got put in the pen and met its demise in about 5 seconds...SNAP, it was gone! Poor little ducky. We then watched a show where a couple of guys played with snakes (taunted the cobras, let a big python type snake wrap itself around the guys head) and with the crocs, standing on top of them, and putting their head in its mouth...crazy stuff. Pretty neat to see.
On through the mountains we continued until we came to a lake, where we stopped and looked at the temple on the lake. We then continued on up the windy road until we came to a place where monkeys were hanging out on the side of the road (and in the middle of the road), so we had to stop. Just as we got out of the vehicle, a big truck drove by and threw a whole bunch of lychee fruit on the road and the monkeys came in hoards trying to dodge the traffic to pick up the fruit off the road. We'd dodge the traffic too to run out on the road so we could pick up fruit to hand to the monkeys. Lots of fun - these monkeys were very friendly, but a lot more timid than the ones in the park. There was no digging in our pockets from these little guys.
Our next stop was at Gigit, Bali's tallest waterfall. We hiked in along a paved path for quite awhile to get to the falls, but it was worth the walk. Spectacular site. And we did a little shopping on the way back - of course, all along the path were people selling their wares. We bought some more spices (vanilla, saffron, white pepper, etc) and Kevin bought a wood carving for a friend.
We then ended our drive at Singaraja, near the Northern coast of Bali, where we stopped for lunch at Lovina, which is right on the beach (black sand beach). Had an Indonesian lunch, and then hit the road for the 3 hr drive back to Sanur. Made a few more stops along the way at a couple of lookouts over the rice fields, and of course to see the monkeys again.
Was a fun day. There were a few places along the way today that I think if we were to come back to Bali, we would stay at for a few days - one was a beautiful resort in the hills overlooking the rice fields, and I think we'd like to spend some time in Singaraja. The northern coast is quite nice.
