Easter Skiing
Headed up to Mt Washington for the Easter long weekend with our friends to get in some spring skiing. Mt Washington has over 500 cm of snow, so should make for some great skiing.....well maybe not. It was blizzardy white-out conditions on Friday, power went out, lifts were not running and it was snowing, blowing and miserable. They managed to open one lift in the afternoon so Kevin ad Reade attempted to ski in the blizzard. Kevin gave up after one run, which apparently took far less effort than hoofing it back thru the 6 feet of snow to get back to the lodge. Sank deeper with every step, came back huffing and a puffing from the hike. Reade was a little more adventuresome, and managed to get in 5 runs. Power came back on later Fri afternoon, so managed to cook a nice dinner, and had a lovely evening sipping wine while it continued to snow and blow outside.
Sat morning was beautiful and clear, to our delight, so got in a full day of skiing. The few runs that were groomed were pretty nice to ski, but the rest was quite humpy and bumpy from all the blowing snow the day before, so not bad skiing, but not as fabulous as expected with the amount of snowpack they had. Kevin and I packed it in around 2 pm and headed down to Courtenay to the chocolate shop to pick up a few Easter treats. Made our way back up the hill, and cooked a lovely Easter Ham dinner.
Sunday morning - egg hunt with the girls (ok Kevin and I slept in a bit and missed most of the hunt), breakfast, and then time to pack up and go. Kevin had a flight to catch to California later in the afternoon so couldn't stay for another day of skiing. The weather was pretty miserable again anyway, blowing and snowing, so wasn't too disappointed that we had to leave. Our friends stayed for the day and got in another day of skiing though. Packed up the car - I think we ended up taking about a foot of snow back with us as it blew into the car as we packed. Kevin had to even put the chains on just to get out of the parking lot and down the hill. Was so foggy and blowing that we had to stop a few times in the middle of the road because we couldn't see a damn thing. What the heck - this is not the spring skiing weather we were hoping for!! Got a littel ways down the hill, pulled off the chains, and we were good to go. Such a different world from top to bottom - was just raining a bit at the bottom of the hill, and of course all green and blooming!
So all in all, not the greatest of ski weekends, but fun nonetheless just to get away for the weekend and spend it with good friends.
And from the snow to the sun...we are off to Kauai next weekend!!!
