An afternoon in Arles
We drove to Arles today. Kevin was in his glory driving on the motorway, allowed to drive 130km/hr. Our poor little rental car was huffin' and puffin' the whole time! They sure do drive different over here, everyone gets out of each other's way, are all very aggressive, but very aware. Not like all the grams and pops in Victoria that drive like they are dead. And you sure can tell who is German - they are in the cars that wizz by you doing much faster than 130! We did pretty good finding our way to Arles....well, after we got going the right direction on the divided motorway - had to drive a long way to find a turnoff to get turned around to get on the other side!
Arles - quaint little town. Lots of old Roman ruins around the village, the old amphitheatre was kinda cool to see. Very narrow streets throughout the town - amazing how cars get around on these streets; oh and they do - when they come barral-assing down the little streets, you damn near have to hug the walls to let them by. Walked around for a bit, had lunch at a streetside cafe (mmm, I had the best scallop dish ever), and then headed home (Kevin was excited to get back on the road, screaming "I love driving in Europe" all the way home).
We stopped at the huge shopping centre just outside our village for some groceries (and ooh - there just happened to be a clothing store there too, so I popped in and found a nice sweater to buy), and headed back to our humble abode for the evening. Will probably have a late dinner, as we ate lunch quite late this afternoon.
Looks like we are off to the train station in Aix tomorrow to find out how we are going to get to Italy on the weekend, and perhaps just spend the afternoon by the pool.....unless Kevin gets the urge to drive somewhere on the motorway again. We saw a sign to Barcelona today which is probably about 5 hrs away, but I think Kevin would have been quite happy to drive there and back today!! Who knows where we will end up tomorrow...
