Versailles - palace of the sun king!

Wow...all I can say is WOW. What an amazing place. A kingdom that bankrupted a nation...I can see how that happened. Such a monstrosity of a place. We took the full meal deal tour today, seeing the chateau (in and out), the chapel, the opera house, Dauphin's apartments (heir to the throne), the grounds, and Marie Antoinette's estate, which included her own chapel, a theatre, and many other little buildings, pillars and statues. The grounds were absolutely amazing. Lots was under restoration, but it was easy to picture what it must have been like in all its glory years ago. Quite spectacular!
Only disappointment- out of all the fountains on the grounds (so many that the king at the time had rivers diverted to feed them all), not a single one was running. That was a let down (I'm a big fan of fountains). Could have spent days touring the grounds. Got a little wet in the rain today, but that didn't stop us from seeing all we could see. Our tour of the grounds was cut a little short, as we caught one of the last trams around to see it. All in all, a great site-see.
Headed back to the city, went for dinner, and wondered around the area one last time - last night in Paris. Went back to see Notre Dame at night, all lit up, and said good-bye to Paris!

[amazing Versailles fact - prior to the French Revolution, the Domaine de Versailles covered an area of 7,800 hectares, i.e., the presnt area of the city of Paris - now that is amazing]
(today, it represents only 800 hectares)
