Beach Day

Our first sit on the beach day! It was a fabulous day, sunny and hot (well, every day has been hot and sticky). We had breakfast at the outdoor hotel restaurant and then got ready for a day on the beach. Went for a bit of a swim in the ocean, caught some rays on the lounge chairs and then hired a guy (Nyomin - helmut # 114) to take us out in his glass bottom boat to the reef for some snorkeling. It was quite a bright sunny day, and between that and the fact that they have had a lot of rain which has made the water a bit unclear, the snorkeling was not great; quite murky at times, but had a few instances where Nyomin threw a bit of bread in the water and we were then surrounded by brightly coloured fish. The corral in some places was quite nice too...when you could clearly see it. Was fun though getting out in the water...usually I bail after 10-15 mins cause I get cold and/or tired, but in this weather and calm water, I was able to go for the whole hour - the ocean is quite refreshing in this hot muggy weather. We then headed back into the beach where we finally gave into the beach massage ladies, and Kevin had a full body beachside massage, and I got a manicure. These ladies are relentless, constantly asking you for "massage...I give you good deal...manicure...pedicure...I straighten your hair". Apparently if you throw a little money at them for one servie, they'll leave you alone for a few days.....until they think its time you need your nails done again. So we'll see...

Our drive came and picked us up around 5 pm to head into Seminyak for dinner. We first went to Ku De Ta, a hip and modern cocktail bar and restaurant right on the beach to have appies and drinks and watch the sunset (famous for its sunsets), which was beautiful. We sat with a couple of girls from Jakarta that were really nice to talk to. They were interior designers, working on a new resort hotel in Nusa Dua. This place was great for people watching - it was packed with people from all over, young and old. The best I think we saw was a couple with orange fake'n'baked skin and bleached white-blond hair (probably in their 50's but made to look like they were 20), and white faces that didn't move an inch (or match the colour of the rest of their bodies). Freaky looking to say the least! It was hard not to stare. We then had Made take us to a friend-recommended restaurant called Hu'u (there are many - they provided us a 4 page list of things to see and places to go). Food was really good. We met the chef, Phillip from Michigan, and ended up having him make us a special fancy dessert tasting tray, which turned out to be complimentary. Nice guy - has run restaurants all over Indonesia. Sounds like he is right out of the hood though, with a heavy bronx type accent. Not the type of guy you would expect to be the chef at a high end Balinese restaurant.
Then it was back to Tandjung Sari (TJ we'll call it from now on) for beddy-by. We switched from the Garden Villa room to the Beachside Villa today, so we'll see how it is. We think we like the Garden villa room better, but the location right by the beach is a definite plus!
